26 December 2002 – A big hello to everyone. I hope that you have all had a good Christmas. I arrived back from Port Sudan on 21st with the idea of having a few meetings with the UN and other NGOs. I am going to take a break over New Year so had thought that Christmas would be very quiet but as it turns out I could not have been more wrong.
I am really lucky to have my good friend Roman Majcher (pronounced "my hair" in a posh voice) here in Khartoum, working for the French NGO Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger). Roman and I started working for ACF at the same time and spent sometime together in Paris during our initial training period. The aid world is generaly very small and it seems inevitable that you keep bumping into people in different places, but of all the people to bump into I am very happy that it was Roman. Roman invited me to various Christmas celebrations and I ended up on the 24th at a huge dinner for members of ACF and Medicine Sans Frontiers (doctors without borders).
It's quite strange to sit together with so many other expatriates, particularly as I am the only one working in the North of Sudan for Oxfam. It was, however, great to sit and talk and catch up on news.
On the 25th I went to another HUGE meal at the house of Goal, an Irish NGO. The meal must have been attended by at least 60 people from all walks of life, and was a spectacular display of rampant hospitality, that was definitely greatly appreciated by all.
So, can I recommend Khartoum for Christmas? Well I have to say that I would.
